Our Fun Guide for Beach Day
Bernedoodles are friendly, playful dogs. Many of them love being around water! This comes from their parent breeds. Poodles are great swimmers, and Bernese Mountain Dogs enjoy outdoor adventures. When you mix them, you often get a dog that is curious and excited about water.
Do Bernedoodles Like Water?
Many Bernedoodles enjoy splashing in water, running along the shore, or even swimming. Some may jump right in, while others feel unsure at first. While we do introduce puppies to water-play before you welcome them home, every dog is different. It’s important to watch your dog and adjust how you train them and how you include them in your water activities based on how they feel.
How to Introduce Your Dog to Water
If your Bernedoodle is new to water, go slow and make it fun.
Start small: Begin with a shallow area, like the edge of a lake or a kiddie pool.
Use toys: Bring a favorite toy and toss it near the water to encourage your dog.
Stay close: Walk into the water with your dog so they feel safe.
Give praise: Use a happy voice and treats when your dog tries something new.
Never force it: Let your dog choose to go in. This builds trust.
Staying Safe During Water Play
Use a dog life jacket: This helps keep your dog safe, especially in deep water.
Bring fresh water: Dogs should not drink salt water or dirty lake water.
Watch the weather: Avoid strong waves or fast-moving water.
Take breaks: Too much swimming can make your dog tired.
Keep an eye on your dog: Always supervise them.
Helpful Supplies for a Beach Day
Dog life jacket
Long leash
Fresh water and bowl
Dog-safe sunscreen (for light-colored noses)
Towels
Beach blanket (sand can be hot, and towel will keep them comfortable)
Shade, like a beach umbrella
Floating toys
Treats to reinforce recall and other positive behavior
Post-Water Coat Care
Bernedoodles have thick, curly or wavy coats. After playing in water, their fur needs care.
Rinse your dog: Wash off salt, sand, or dirt with clean water.
Dry well: A towel will help your dog dry more quickly if they are getting the shivers from cold water.
Brush the coat: When the dog's coat is dry, you can give your dog a quick brush to prevent tangles and mats. This will also help all the sand fall out of their coat.
Check ears: Dry ears gently to help prevent infections.
Rinse paws: Remove sand or small debris.
Final Thoughts
A beach day with your Bernedoodle can be full of fun and happy memories. With a little planning and care, your dog can enjoy the water safely. Take it slow, stay prepared, and most of all—have fun together!
